How to Create Custom Taxonomies in WordPress

Are you looking for a way to create custom taxonomies? This snippet lets you create your own custom taxonomies for the usual or custom post types.

Instructions:

  1. Add this code to your theme’s functions.php file or in a site-specific plugin.
  2. Change the tag name ('my_tags') and label ('My Tags') on line 2 to your own tag name and label. Optionally change the post type ('post') to whatever post type you’d like.
function my_taxonomies() {
     register_taxonomy('my_tags', 'post', array('label' => 'My Tags'));
}
add_action( 'init', 'my_taxonomies');
