SiteGround Cheap Hosting Review

SiteGround Cheap Hosting

SiteGround offers cheap hosting, also known as shared hosting, which is the best option for users who are just starting out and need an affordable hosting solution. With cheap hosting, many websites will share resources of the same server, which makes the cost low.

Although it’s SiteGround’s cheapest hosting option available, there’s nothing to be concerned about since your files and data will be secure on the server.

SiteGround offers 3 different shared hosting plans: Startup, GrowBig, and GoGeek.

The Startup plan allows you to host only one website which is great for bloggers and websites of small businesses. With all other plans, you can host multiple websites.

With every SiteGround cheap hosting plan, you get dozens of one-click installers for WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, etc. that help you quickly start a website.

The GoGeek plan offers geeky advanced features like PCI compliant server, WordPress and Joomla staging, and one-click git repo creation.

SiteGround doesn’t have VPS hosting (virtual private server) plans, but they do offer cloud hosting plans, which is an in-between solution for sites that outgrows shared hosting but can’t afford to have dedicated hosting.

  • Free auto daily backups
  • Free Cloudflare CDN

Features

(5.0 / 5.0)

SiteGround comes with a unique set of features that help you create a blazing-fast website with ease. Let’s take a look at some of the important features you need to look for when hosting a website.

Free SSL

With every SiteGround hosting plan, you get a free SSL certificate. When you host your website on the SiteGround platform, a free standard SSL certificate is automatically enabled without any effort.

SiteGround integrates with the Let’s Encrypt project to provide SSL certificates to its users. An SSL certificate protects user data and helps meet search engine requirements to improve website rankings.

Free Cloudflare CDN

SiteGround offers a free CDN which enables the website to load from the nearest data point for a user. Cloudflare’s CDN, clubbed with SiteGround hosting, ensures your website loads quickly and has the fastest response time.

Free Email Service

SiteGround lets you create a free email address with your domain name. There’s no limit to adding email accounts to your hosting plan.

The email tools include a user-friendly webmail interface, email forwarding option, autoresponders, and more. They also support SMTP, POP3, and other email protocols to deliver your emails smoothly.

Super Caching

By default, SiteGround enables a caching system for all users on their servers. This means your site will load faster than usual from the memory of the server.

It comes with a SuperCacher service to further improve the website loading speed. This service is available specifically for their premium plans (GrowBig and GoGeek).

Free Auto Daily Backups

Many web hosting services don’t back up your site on a daily basis. However, all SiteGround plans come with daily automatic backups, ensuring you don’t have to remember to back up your site regularly.

You can also generate on-demand backups from SiteGround’s provided tools. This service is free on the premium plans and costs a minimal fee on the starter plan.

Website Transfer Tool

When moving a website from one host to another, you need to be careful of traffic, security, backups, and many other things. SiteGround offers a free WordPress plugin that works magically to move your WordPress website without affecting your content or configuration.

SiteGround also provides a professional website migration and transfer service. This is a paid service where a team of experts will move your site while you sit back and relax.

SSD Storage

SiteGround uses solid-state drives (SSDs) instead of Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) for storage. Since SSDs don’t have moving parts, they’ve been proven to improve site performance compared to websites that use HDD storage.

Advanced Security

Security is the key concern when hosting a website with any provider. SiteGround provides free in-house SSH to restrict user account access for your hosting.

It gives an encrypted connection to your hosting account, so web developers and website admins can access the web server in a secure environment. These security features also help manage large files and databases securely.

SiteGround Hosting Pros:

Let’s take a look at how SiteGround stacks up against the competition:

Choose Your Data Center

Even with a shared hosting plan, you’ll be asked to choose your preferred data center. This way, you can ensure your site is hosted on servers closer to your audience geographically.

Amazing Customer Support

SiteGround is well-known for its superior customer service. Best of all, you don’t have to wait more than a few seconds for the next available operator because they have additional support staff in all shifts, so there’s always someone to pick up the live chat. With the GoGeek plan, you’ll get priority support.

Unmetered Bandwidth

The bandwidth is unmetered meaning you’re not charged based on the bandwidth. SiteGround’s StartUp plan, GrowBig plan, and GoGeek plan come with an unmetered data transfer that you can use as much as you like.

Money-Back Guarantee

SiteGround offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on all their plans. This will allow you to test the service and tools with full options for up to a month and if you feel SiteGround isn’t the host for your site, you can request a full refund.

The refund doesn’t include the domain registration fees. The domain name will be your property anyway.

SiteGround Hosting Cons:

Here are some limitations of SiteGround Hosting…

Expensive Plans

Compared to other hosting providers like Bluehost, SiteGround’s pricing is a bit expensive. However, SiteGround offers several unique features than Bluehost for faster page rendering.

SiteGround Exclusive Plans

No Free Domain

Unlike popular web hosting services, SiteGround doesn’t offer free domain names with their plans. If you’re starting your website, this will be an additional cost to your budget.

Performance

SiteGround Uptime Guarantee and Speed Tests

SiteGround ensures a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Best of all, if you ever experience more than 0.1% downtime on a yearly basis, you will be compensated.

To provide our users with real facts, we built a WordPress test site environment and perform several speed tests using the following tools:

  • Pingdom
  • Load Impact
  • Bitcatcha

speed test siteground

According to Pingdom’s website speed test, our test site loads in less than a second for a server in Dallas, Texas. That’s faster than 95% of all tested sites.

Apart from Pingdom, we also used a testing tool called Load Impact to figure out how SiteGround handles visitors during a traffic surge. Load Impact sent some virtual users (VUs) to our site and gradually built up to 100 visitors at a time.

loadimpact-siteground

In the chart, you can find a blue line (VUs active) which shows the number of virtual users sent to our SiteGround site and a green line (VU load time) which represents how much time it would take to load a web page for a user.

SiteGround performed almost consistently except for a spike when there were 50 users on the site. It quickly recovered and page load time remained steadily low even with more users.

It’s worth noting that the site never went down during our speed test. Take a look at the report below.

siteground uptime

SiteGround Server Response Time

The content on your website has a huge influence on page loading time. For instance, if your site has too many images, it will take more time to load than a lightweight site. In fact, images account for most of the downloadable bytes in a typical site.

To get accurate results, instead of the analysis of page load time alone, we decided to test the actual server response time by entirely ignoring the content of our SiteGround site.

To track our SiteGround server response time, we used a tool known as Bitcatcha. Bitcatcha works differently from Pingdom.

Bitcatcha ignores the content of your page and records the page loading time from eight different global locations: New York, LA, London, Brazil, India, Singapore, Japan, and Australia. The speed for each location is measured three separate times, and then the results are averaged.

response time siteground

From the result, it’s evident that SiteGround is the perfect choice if your target audience is mostly located in the United States. In the United States, the server responded in just a fraction of a second. In all other locations, except Japan, the server responded within less than a second.

If your target audience is mostly located in Japan, it’s in your best interest to move your site to their Asia-Pacific data center for the best results.

  1. Just has an instance where my six monthly billing cycle no longer had an option for my cloud services. Quick chat with support and they had a link available for me and finished it while they waited to ensure everything went smooth, another example of the great support I always receive from Siteground support Staff!

  2. I’m very happy with siteground. I have been with siteground for almost two years and every time i need assistance they are there. I am very happy with the service!

  3. Stephen Clausi April 28, 2015 at 9:58 pm

I had a major problem with my e-mail so I was unable to get my log in information. Through chat I was able to get the answers and help I needed right away. Five Stars all the way thank you so much.

  4. Siteground is a great hosting service for wordpress and prestashop. I’m using it for the past two years. Excellent support service. Always solved all my little problems in few minutes. I always switch all my clients to this provider even if I’m italian and the support is only in english.

    I definitely recommend it. 🙂

  5. 1 Star – extremely disappointing and very expensive experience with Siteground.

I switched after a really bad experience with Westhost (too many issues to note).

I started with a GoGeek Account. I am using Vanilla WordPress sites with enfold theme, and no additional plugins besides wordfence, All in One SEO.

After 2 weeks, they told me I was using too many CPU executions. I was away and they just shut the account off. They did warn me the day before via email/support ticket, but again I was away and the email went to spam. I started getting phone calls from a couple clients, and visitors that my web account was Suspended. Awesome.

Then I started a separate account, and that still was not enough. Too many CPU executions. maybe a dozen sites with 10k in traffic per month total.

You have to run wordfence because if they find a suspicious file, your whole account immediately gets disabled. Once I was disabled because they found a file in the Wordfence quarantine folder. It took 3 hours on a Sunday missing my family to get them to turn it back on. I had to change passwords, etc what an annyoing drill.

Sales told me I should go to Cloud Hosting because I used too many resources. Mind you, I had a larger account than on westhost.

The cloud hosting was SUPER FAST. I mean 100-200 milliseconds fast.

After 1 week of cloud hosting, it started going down. Usually on a Sunday morning at 3am. It would go unnoticed by siteground until I called. Several times it went down for hours and hours and it was to the point I had 94% uptime. I was hosting a few other clients and they were extremely unhappy.

Email was disappointment as well. Dropped emails, service down, etc.

Support was always happy and accommodating, but the Techs would blame literally 6-8 hours of downtime on “server issues”, the “varnish cache failing”, and then finally they told me I was using too many resources again. a dozen active sites on a Cloud Host?

So I decided to move everyone to bluehost. I bought 8 Business Pro accounts, and after 1 month I have 100% uptime. I really like my sales guy, and they are “pretty good”.

I am spending $300/year more, but my kids have their dad back on Sundays and clients are happy.

I though I could make money with a vps and hosting clients, but it did not work out for me… Just not worth the time.

  6. I have only recently started hosting with siteground and must say that I am VERY happy with the services. The staff are accessible, accommodating and beyond helpful! I have worked on websites for many, many years and I have never found a hosting company that provides 24/7 prompt and helpful service like this! Very impressed!

  7. Best customer service i have ever received online and possibly in LIFE! no exaggeration. A great company with great values. Always try there best to resolve issues sufficient and swift. Happy to be hosting with siteground.

  8. Laura Castetter April 24, 2015 at 5:01 pm

I’ve been using SiteGround for a few months now and I honestly won’t go back to using any other company. They are so fast and so helpful. Such a refreshing change!

  9. You guys are always so helpful! You don’t give up until I’m satisfied with the issue. I thank you kindly for your help.

  10. Amazing tech support. I needed help from the very first step to the end and they were amazing. thanks!

  11. I’m with Siteground for almost 6 months and I need to say that they are great! Very fast, knowledgeable customer support. I will be moving two more pages to their hosting server soon.

  12. Siteground support team has never make me wait the answer to long. Their reply and solve the problem as soon as possible. Best support n best services they provide. It is a worthy to host the site @ siteground.

    Thank you.

  13. Great customer support team!
I thought I’d wait for an elusive answer but NO.
I received it minutes after I posted and RIGHT ON.

    Many thanks

  14. Deborah Chaney April 20, 2015 at 7:49 pm

I’ve been with Siteground since HostGator decided customer service was not their priority. Siteground is well versed in Joomla and that’s what I use for all my websites and have considerable experience though still need help once in a while. Every question I ask they respond quickly and within their ability to help me (sometimes above!). They have not failed to be better than I hoped. The price is right and they are great to work with.

  15. Siteground is Awesome. They are so helpful and try their best. They are very supportive with SE PHP. Unique feature is that their shared hosting supports memcache and optimization unlike most other hosting. Recently I had issue with memcache stability. Here was their solution:
“Furthermore, I have read your ticket history and as far as I understood the issue that you are experiencing is with the memcached server. I have noticed that once the memcached cache is flushed, the issue is resolved. This is why I have suggested to upgrade to a cloud server, where we could set a cron job to flush the cache frequently.

Still, I have searched on the Internet for similar issues and I have found a work-around in this case. I have set a cron job for your account that will run every hour on the hour and will open a telnet connection on the memcached port to flush the cache.

You could change the frequency at which the cron job will be executed through cPanel –> Cron Jobs. Keep in mind that according to our Terms of Use, a cron job could not be executed more than once for a period of thirty minutes on our shared servers.”

You won’t get awesome service like this with other shared host providers.

Keep up the great work Siteground!

  16. I just setup my MX records to point to gmail with the PUSH OF A BUTTON. Fabulous!

  17. Don’t know what to say then 10/10 – Changed from my old host to Siteground and i dont regret a single secound they’re fast reliable and always there when help is needed.

  18. I cannot overstate how many times Siteground tech support has pulled my butt out of the fire, across a variety of technical topics and issues over the last 5-8 years across many domains and installations. 1) Quick response 2) Problems always solved 3) High professionalism and courtesy.

I continue to point people and clients needing a host to Siteground. And now I’m transferring my various domains registrations to Siteground away from Network Solutions, having discovered how convenient and affordable managing those domains are from the SG interface.

    Bravo.

  19. It was recommended to me by a friend. They rock so far, I hope they keep this great Technical support…

  20. We are coming to the end of our six month test of SiteGround’s VPS Cloud service.
The positive reviews for Siteground primarily come from the shared hosting packages that they offer.
However, we have mixed feelings about the company and their services.
We just upgraded to the new Enterprise Cloud hosting (migration cost of 140USD), and noticed a bump in performance in the backend admin of our WPMU. The move did not help with pageload times, nor did we see an improvement in throughput, our main concern.
The biggest gripe I have about SiteGround services is the lack of resources they apply to their VPS product, especially in relation to bandwidth. This is not to be confused with pageload times.
This page, as an example, has a pageload speed of 4.53 seconds, and a throughput (also known as download speed) of 1438.51 kbps [wow!] (we’re testing from Sydney, Australia). Our eCommerce site, coriandercustomprinting.com, has a pageload time of 4.25 seconds, but a throughput of only 28kbps.
We’ve tested numerous SiteGround customers’ sites that we found on hosting-reviews, and while a few of them ranked similarly, the majority tested were around 300-400kbps and upwards.
We also looked at customers on Inmotion, and did our own testing on a Cloudways’ trial server. Here to we saw throughput speeds upwards of 500 to 600kbps on average.
The frustrating thing about these two sets of tests is that many of the sites that performed better were located State side, and from the comments left in reviews, are on shared hosting plans.
We also noticed that our dedicated and server IPs were located in the US – our server is in Singapore, and as I mentioned above, we’re in Sydney, Australia.
We’ll continue to work with SiteGround to try to resolve this issue, but if we can’t we’ll be moving to a different hosting plan with another provider. Which in many respects would be a shame, as the new cloud hosting is a vast improvement over the old troubled one, with tons of improvements and options. But at the end of the day, if the pipe connecting your service is really small, the super optioned VPS doesn’t really count for much.

  21. Well, I joined about a week ago and I must say that the service is great and kind as well as professional. The answer to support ticket so fast I was shocked. So far so good, Hope it will stay that way.

  22. The best customer support I have ever, ever, ever experienced. I dont care about how many features ( too many ) cPanel has but good customer service is the thing that makes me stay with my service provider.
SiteGround is not only good but the are the Top of the line customer service team.
    Thank you

  23. L. D. Conquest April 9, 2015 at 2:21 am

So Far, So Good. In the past few days I’ve contacted the chat tech support with questions about hosting prior to opening an account and also after setting up the account.
Both times the response was prompt and the questions answered. Since I am not a Geek, it took a bit of explaining before I understood the tech terms. Great that tech support is there.

  24. …one more time, I love support on Siteground and even Live chat!

  25. I have used the online chat for tech support and received wonderful assistance. I am very pleased with SiteGround’s service. I went to a WordPress Meetup group in Orlando and several developers and designers highly recommended SiteGround as a hosting company. I see why. I was with another hosting company and I am happy I made the switch.
