How to Restrict Admin Panel to Administrators Only in WordPress

Snippets by IsItWP

Are you looking for a way to restrict admin panel to administrators only? While there’s probably a plugin for this, we have created a quick code snippet that you can use to restrict admin panel to administrators only in WordPress.

All the users who are not administrators and try to access the admin panel will be redirected to homepage URL. This is a good way of keeping members away from anything WordPress related on your site.

Instructions:

All you have to do is add this code to your theme’s functions.php file or in a site-specific plugin:

function restrict_admin_access(){
	global $current_user;
	get_currentuserinfo();
	if (!array_key_exists('administrator', $current_user->caps)) {
		wp_redirect( get_bloginfo('url') );
		exit;
	}
}
add_action('admin_init', 'restrict_admin_access', 1);

Note: If this is your first time adding code snippets in WordPress, then please refer to our guide on how to properly add code snippets in WordPress, so you don’t accidentally break your site.
